Pother Shesh, D. P. Roy Chowdhury’s Dark Shadow, evokes an animal stalking its prey from a tree-top. Painted in black, the beast’s posture and appearance resemble that of a jaguar or panther. Peering out from a branch, this otherworldly creature evokes a sense of uneasiness in the viewer transfixed by its eyes. Roy Chowdhury, a proponent of the Bengal School wash style of painting that he combined with academic realism, uses white highlights to define the world surrounding the animal.
