In his practice, D. P. Roy Chowdhury imbibed the rich visual vocabularies of both Western and Eastern traditions of art. A well-known painter, he was also one of India’s foremost sculptors. Chowdhury’s sculptures are mostly realistic, focusing, as seen in this Untitled work, on facial expressions to arrive at an urgency and determination of the portrayed individual with rare perfection. Chowdhury was inspired by master sculptor August Rodin but eventually created sculptures that were rooted in an innate Indianness.
