One of the lesser explored themes by Bijan Chowdhury, his painting of illicit love affects a monumentality in the manner in which he paints the characters as larger-than-life. Like the room where they have spent a night of passion, he renders his figures in a similar grey hue, casting them with a solidity that is evident in the man’s muscled torso and the woman’s toned body. The room reveals nothing that establishes their identity, but the manner of his departure informs us of a relationship outside the bonds of propriety.
