Today the entire road in front of the Qila is known as Chandni Chowk. Historically, it was divided into four sections. Right opposite the Lahori Darwaza was Urdu Bazar or camp market, which led on to the Jauhri Bazar. Beyond this was a 480-yard-long market with a central square commissioned and conceptualised by Princess Jahanara Begum in 1650. It was flanked by Begum ki Sarai and Begum ka Bagh. The Sarai was destroyed post 1857 and the Town Hall stands on the same location. The Begum ka Bagh was renamed as Queen’s Gardens and is today Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Park.
