Arpana Caur’s paintings in the decade of the Eighties were informed by the massacre of people from the Sikh community, which proved a cathartic moment for the artist. As someone who invariably has women protagonists to tell the narrative, in this work we find at the centre of the canvas an aged female figure on a charpai. The other sections of the canvas feature other people who though separated and involved in their own ‘sea’ of struggles, are connected to one another, including the old woman.
