Manjit Bawa’s painting style—featuring delicately bulging figures placed in flat planes of deep colours—earned him a unique place in the Indian modern art narrative. His rich colour scheme, however, was not a later day creation but was always part of his repertoire, albeit in a different avatar. This early watercolour is an example of the colour harmony Bawa was able to achieve. This dense landscape appears to be a snapshot of a sun-washed cobbled street in the Basque region of Spain, where Bawa had travelled while studying in England between 1964 and 1971.
