With the Weavers’ Service Centre, cultural doyenne Pupul Jayakar initiated a collaboration between established artists and traditional weavers, to infuse the latter’s craftsmanship with a contemporary design idiom. Prabhkar Barwe joined the centre in Varanasi at a time when he was dissatisfied with his art practice and was looking for a fresh expression, as he admitted in an interview. Tantric imagery, with its symbols and sacred signs, allowed Barwe to process the space-time dynamics, not only in his own practice but also in experiments such as this block-printed saree.
