Trained in the Bengal School style, Maniklal Banerjee achieved perfection in rendering watercolours on the smooth surface of silk but in a style distinctively his own, thereby giving new direction to the Bengal School aesthetic. In this Untitled work, the focus is the small fleet of fishermen’s boats at sea with their various fluttering flags, including the Indian tricolour. The boats are perhaps returning to the shore as they seem loaded with catch. However, it’s the backdrop that uplifts the painting with the water giving way to the evening sky on the horizon in the sfumato technique.
