Watercolour, ink and graphite on paper pasted on board
Waring & Gillow, a noted luxury English furniture firm, secured some of the most important commissions for interior fittings for luxury yachts, liners, hotels in the late 1800s. The work under consideration here, 1st Smoking Room, is based on one the commissions that the company received from Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. for its ships that were creating luxurious fittings in their first-class lounge areas. The masterful draftsmanship of the artist in this image is noteworthy given how it’s now missing despite access to technological tools.
