It was in the 1960s that J. Sultan Ali started taking his first steps towards understanding tribal cultures of India, which would eventually give an indigenist vocabulary to his art. This tryst with tribal cultures would remain a lifelong occupation for Ali, even though he would experiment with other styles and subjects in later years. This oil on canvas is a straight tribute to the tribal world, Adivasi-Jagat, which the title means in English. Yet, it is not realist but abstract indigenist rendition that makes this work seminal.
