OVERVIEW ARTWORKS ABOUT SOLVYNS

Each of the 4 volumes of Les Hindoûs` is divided into 12 sections or ‘numbers’ containing 6 plates, including numerous double-page plates. When labelling them, Solvyns used erratic and inconsistent spelling. Many of his terms are perplexing as he tried to render Bengali words phonetically into French. To make identification easier, modern spellings have been used alongside those originally engraved by Solvyns in the original plates.
