A painter in the realist tradition, Jogesh Chandra Seal trained at the rebel Jubilee Art Academy like his contemporary Hemen Mazumdar. Seal had a short life of only thirty-one years, but left behind exquisite specimens of his mastery over realistic depiction of the human form, among other works. Given the absolutely natural likeness of the frontal view of the female figure, this Untitled oil is a bold work for its time—years later, in another part of the country (Bombay), F. N. Souza and Akbar Padamsee, in different years, would face legal action for their shows depicting nude figures.
