Kolkata Pulp: Material MattersFebruary 18, 2023, Nirupama Studio for Handmade Papers, Tiljala A day-long papermaking workshop by Anupam Chakrabarty, Founder of the Nirupama Academy of Handmade Paper, where participants will learn the process of preparing pulp from plant fiber, along with relief paper casting, watermarking and embossing techniques. ABOUT PULP-PAPER-PRINT Each edition of Pulp-Paper-Print focuses on one medium of art-making—with talks, walks, workshops, studio visits, that explore the many historic, creative and commercial dimensions of materials. Over the course of each weekend, we draw inspiration from artists in our collection who have experimented with a specific material or technique in the past, meet artists who continue to complicate the way these are used today, and try out our own creative experiments. We also visit workshops and factories to discover how, by using these materials, art-making becomes a part of a larger environmental, industrial and commercial process—mapping the many ways art is informed by, and in turn informs our world. The material in focus for our first edition is pulp, inspired by the iconic Wounds series by the artist Somnath Hore—where he moved away from using paper as a surface, to using pulp as the primary medium instead. We invite you to join us as we trace its journey from fibre and fragments, to a medium that transforms into a powerful tool for recording impressions and ideas in the hands of artists, and ultimately into a piece of paper that we may treasure, or throw away. This event is a part of Pulp-Paper-Print, a weekend programme where we take a closer look at the materials and tools in an artist’s studio, using them as clues to reveal new ways of interpreting and making art. |
