While pioneering Western artists came to India seeking grand monuments and vast new landscapes, from the mid-19th century onwards attention had shifted to a living India: in the daily routine of an Indian bazaar or a haveli...as captured by fascinating painters such as William Simpson, Olinto Ghilardi, Marius Bauer, Erich Kips and Hugo Pederson, and yet others who came from even further afield, such as Edwin Lord Weeks from America, or Hiroshi Yoshida from Japan.
