Inscribed in Persian, this Company Painting was possibly created by an artist who must have been previously employed in a Mughal court or any of its provinces but with the changing political dispensation, had found livelihood with the new masters of the land, the traders of the English East India Company. The company hired several artists to rigorously document the new colony visually, of which such ornithological studies formed an important part. The artist here creates a veritable likeness of the scaly-breasted munia, also known as nutmeg mannikin or spice finch, and native to tropical Asia.
