Following the announcement of Queen Victoria’s assumption of the imperial title, an order called ‘The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire’ was introduced on January 1, 1878, as a system of honours for civilians and officials serving the British Crown. The awardees were conferred with the title of the Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire and the honours were given out during the investiture ceremony, one of the main events of the assemblage.
