In what is apparently a delightful departure from the major body of Jogen Chowdhury’s figurative work, this acrylic on canvas is simply titled Animal, though it appears to be a slightly-built goat. The colour palette is cheerful, the lines bear Chowdhury’s stamp though there is no cross-hatching, and the animal’s body bears a mark similar to that of his other human figures. It is in the exposed ribs that one sees through the torso that brings a sense of anguish to the work, especially as it is juxtaposed against a cheerful saffron-pink colour scheme.
