The aristocratic painter Pestonji E. Bomanji, who entered Sir J. J. School of Art at the age of thirteen, was trained in academic realism and made a name for himself in oil portraiture, painting members of his Parsi community and winning accolades. But he excelled in academic landscapes too before he shifted to portraiture. Dhobi Talao is an example of his brilliance as a landscapist, where he displays his control of the medium in his excellent rendition of the evening light at a community water tank used for washing clothes, by whose bank sits a herd of ruminating cows.
