Known as co-founder of the Baroda Group of Artists in 1956 and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, Narayan Shridhar Bendre’s contribution to Indian art is unparalleled. Bendre’s own artistic style emerged from an understanding that artists could be inspired by both Indian cultural roots and Western influences, privileging neither over the other. His devotion to colour is apparent in Untitled (Sinhalese Lady) wherein he creates, in remarkable detail, a female figure who looks directly at the viewer, with an air of confidence yet humility.
