This Untitled gouache by Gobardhan Ash is an example of the work upon which his early reputation as a landscape artist was built. European in approach, the work tells the story of a tryst in an arbour as two figures, perhaps in a cinch, are discernible. The impressionist brushstrokes create an enticing forest scene with the brown of the bark offset by colourful blooms all around. The figures are bathed in a white light, which could be filtered sun’s rays passing through thick foliage, or divine blessing to the union of souls.
