One of India’s most important abstractionists, Shanti Dave achieved early success as a muralist, and a significant part of his oeuvre even in his later years reflected that scale. This Untitled work from 1974 is one such example. Though it measures approx. three by two feet, it evokes a grandness often associated with murals. Evolving from his nebulous abstracts of the previous decade, the indeterminate forms floating in the picture plane bear rudimentary script and umbilical cord-like threads which seem to suggest these as messengers from times past.
