Sohan Qadri’s works have often been read as colour field abstractions but it is crucial to acknowledge the philosophy that informed this modern master’s works. Qadri, working with this favoured medium, soaked the paper marked with dye and allowed colour to seep inside its grain, thus transforming it from a mere surface to a repository of the meditative experience. Here the horizontal lines are pierced through the centre with the dotted vertical line, infusing the vibrantly coloured paper with chakras representing various states of spiritual consciousness. The repetitive use of the motifs adds to the meditative quality of the work.
