Rajendra Dhawan was a reticent man, and his art, in not being loud, garish or verbose, was an extension of his personality. A metaphysical aspect was inherent in his works throughout his career, which made his oeuvre experiential. With his understated palette, strokes that melded into the atmosphere, and highlights that served to put the background in perspective, Dhawan paid homage to Europe. He arrived in Paris in 1970 to study and eventually settled there. Europe then was beset with existential angst, this was best expressed through an abandoning of realism and a focus on a search for the sublime. This Untitled work is characteristic of this period and represents a similar search.
