This dark canvas sets a brooding mood around the Untitled work; the black paint repeatedly loaded onto the sparsely painted background adds to the dark atmosphere. For the artist, ‘all forms known or unknown’ were valuable in painting; here too it is hard to discern any familiar form or figures, yet the artist’s deft use of a restricted palette conveys a feeling of unease, perhaps despair, maybe even evoke presences. Unlike the work of his contemporaries, Dhawan’s works have no elements of geometric abstraction, instead they rely on colour and brushwork to engage the viewer.
