Rajendra Dhawan continues to remain an enigma for India’s art world. Trained in New Delhi—where he was a member of The Unknown group of artists—and Belgrade, he settled in Paris and remained there for the rest of his life, to paint abstract landscapes like a tapestry of emotions. Landscapes may not be the appropriate term for his works which have been referred to as ‘inscapes’ or ‘tentative sketches of the soul’—often suggesting that there is reality beyond the surface and at times just shying away from depicting presence. And yet this Untitled work conveys the certainty of presence.
