This work belongs to a relatively early period in Qadri’s oeuvre when the artist was still experimenting with abstraction. He was to soon abandon representation altogether and shift to his preferred medium of paper with the intent of making the act of creation superfluous. Even as we see a marked difference between these periods of works, what remains common is the visual delight communicated through his skilled use of pure colour. True to Qadri, ‘only emptiness’ communicates ‘with the emptiness of canvas’. The thick impasto implanted sparingly on the bare canvas leaves the onus of meaning-making with the viewer, positioning the work as a modernist marvel.
