When a king and queen set out in procession in Jamini Roy’s universe, they travel in a bugghi (royal Indian carriage), which, as expected, is drawn by the handsome Bankura horse, with its proud neck, alert ears and large, almond eyes. The coachman and the three attendants behind are as much of the soil as the horse and the royal personages inside a beautifully decorated coach. This delightful scene could be a snapshot from a fresco on a village home anywhere in India, with only slight variations in stylisation differentiating the regional styles. It is this universality of Roy’s art that rendered it timeless and the most sought after even in contemporary times.
