The most distinctive feature of Jamini Roy’s works is the solidity of the line—whether the works were simple linear constructions or colourful ode to vibrant Indian life. In this Untitled work, the flourish of his lines is well evident, helping us understand how the artist played with it to create powerful works. This portrait of what seems to be a young man is an anatomical study, albeit through primitivist lines, which succeed in accentuating the strength of his youthful body, and the determination of his purpose, evident from his flexed arms. The ring in an ear lobe points to his affiliations to the warrior class.
