Jamini Roy can truly be called a pioneering master of Indian minimalism as he needed but a few lines to create his instantly endearing and powerful works. This Untitled work, featuring a bull with a prominent dewlap is a perfect example of Roy’s genius. The other highlight of the work is the animal’s eye, large and deep, that lends it an anthropomorphic quality, as if it is about to strike a conversation with the onlooker. The subtle embellishments on the bull evoke the decorations on the animal common in the countryside, when those are worshipped as Nandi, the divine vehicle and constant companion of Shiva.
