Tree in the Palace under which 119 Europeans were murdered

This photograph was taken by Felice Beato, one of the most well-known commercial war photographers of the nineteenth century, who came to India in 1858 and recorded the aftermath of the Revolt of 1857. It shows the Naqqar Khana at the Red Fort, marking the place where 56 Europeans, mainly women and children were massacred by Indian sepoys on May 16, 1857. The inscription on Beato’s photograph mentions the same incident stating that 119 Europeans were killed in June 1857.
