William Simpson

William Simpson (1823–99) was a celebrated Scottish war artist, painter, and lithographer. He first gained international acclaim for his work as the official war artist for the Crimean War (1853-56), commissioned by the prominent London-based lithographers Day & Sons. Following his success in Crimea, Day & Sons sponsored Simpson’s first tour of India, in 1859–62, to document the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857. Simpson returned to India several times between 1864 and 1885 to depict changes in Indian society, chronicling everyday life, urban landscapes, and historical sites.
