UNTITLED, 1970s

Ambadas

One of the founding members of Group 1890, Ambadas (1922-2012) stands apart from his contemporaries. His works have been described by curator Roobina Karode as containing an ‘ambiguity about their orientation, their beginning and end, their entries and exits.’ ‘Untitled’ seems to have no precedence in Indian art, and neither does it fall into any defined categories of art. His fluid brushstrokes have created a canvas which has perpetual momentum.
