Lord Lytton, the viceroy to Queen Victoria in India, was the architect of the Imperial Assemblage of 1877. This portrait shows Lytton in the robes of the Grand Master of the ‘Most Exalted Order of the Star of India’, a chivalrous order created in 1861 for prominent Indian rulers and high-ranking British officials serving in India.
