A pioneering figure of modernism in Indian art, Ambadas created works across mediums in a career spanning over four decades. Unlike the work of his contemporaries, Ambadas’s work sees no shift from the abstract to the figurative or vice versa. His works have always defied categories and are better read through the feelings they evoke rather than through attempts of explanations using words. Characteristic of his works from the ’70s, this Untitled canvas makes use of a dynamic, earthy palette—even as there are no discernible forms in the painting, the colours, ochre, red, green, call to mind nature and germination and take one’s imagination to those hot afternoons that the artist spent in the mango orchards of Akola, Maharashtra.
