For many British visitors to Delhi, the Kashmiri Gate was a special landmark. This was an important site connected to the revolt of 1857, referred to in histories and guidebooks of the time as ‘the Mutiny’. It was through this gate that the British forces entered Delhi on 14 September 1857, allowing them to reconquer the city.
