Chittrovanu Mazumdar evacuates the anthropomorphic form of Kali by
representing her in the colours that the goddess embodies. Her dark skin and open hair are abstracted into black paint spilling across the canvas. Her bloodied red mouth and gold ornamentation seep into the painting as euphemistic indications of her potency and divinity. Born in Paris in 1956, Mazumdar was trained at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. He is known for his large-scale abstract works, as well as his immersive installations that make dramatic use of light and sound to invoke a sensory experience.
