In an entirely abstract manner, Zarina Hashmi’s printmaking articulated a notion of space that could stand for, or recall for her, her home, city or country in the Indian subcontinent with their flexible, changing borders—she lived a nomad’s life for most of her youth and eventually made New York her home. In her urge to find ‘home’, Hashmi’s engagement through her art was with space, a personal journey that questioned identity, the meaning of home, the urge for roots, memory and history, charted through lines. Her emphasis on space, on a minimal, geometric language, allowed a sense of spatial purity to seep into it.
