Earth and Water

This allegorical work comes from that phase of Anupam Sud’s career when painting was still an activity subsidiary to her primary printmaking. This oil on canvas depicts the seamless blending of earth and water through the artist’s signature style of using minimal colours to convey her thoughts—a characteristic akin to her monochromatic prints. A blue-green palette indicates the indissoluble co-existence of earth and water, the harmony brought forth through the smooth gradations of colour. In theme and colour treatment, this painting is different from her later works when her deductive printmaker’s mind would open up to accommodate more colours and multiple narratives.
