Rajendra Dhawan’s works have been referred to as ‘metascapes’ that interact with the viewer on a psychological level. Even when using strong colours such as browns or blacks—as in the case of this Untitled painting—he rendered them softly using dry brush, lending them a heightened sense of colour balance. Some have read Dhawan’s work as carrying hidden secrets of his past and yet there are no discernible signs of the artist’s roots in India or elsewhere. Dhawan’s work cannot be associated with any ideology or philosophy and therefore in their presentation of ‘the interior elsewhere’, attain a sense of universality.
