This work from the late ’90s displays a restless energy in its near-violent brushwork and dark palette. The brushwork also draws attention to the act of painting itself, which was always held primary by the artist. As compared to other works by the artist, this work stands out also for its contrasting use of light on dark; but it becomes one with the oeuvre in that it presents an ‘experience that cannot be verbalised’. The artist’s quiet presence comes through in all his works, even if with human despair in some instances like this.
