In being able to create works that appeal to the senses without having any visible figures, subject or content, Rajendra Dhawan attained success as an abstract artist. His abstractions do not have the chaos from abstract expressionism, rather they quietly beckon one to examine the artist’s interiority. Little is known about the inspiration behind Dhawan’s art but it is now established that his works offer multiple entry points instead of a single fixed interpretation. Sombre hues, browns and maroon, dominate this work and imbue it with a lyrical quality that cannot be explained in words, but can only be experienced.
