Often compared to works by V. S. Gaitonde for their lyrical and mystical quality, Rajendra Dhawan’s canvases came to be known for a soft palette that invited the viewer to experience a higher realm instead of making any loud statement on contemporary topics. Viewers discerned earthy, meditative landscapes in his works, which Dhawan left for them to interpret as they pleased. In this Untitled work from the early ’90s, the distinct use of colour creates pockets that meld into each other on his canvas; the formlessness remains here too a hallmark of his work.
