Rajendra Dhawan was often described as an artist who was ‘reclusive’, sometimes even ‘reluctant’, owing to how little he said, including in his communication through art. His paintings, such as Untitled oil on linen, are quiet, holding their secrets close even while letting us engage with an intense internal landscape. Dhawan, who studied at the School of Art, New Delhi, decided to settle and work in Paris, creating works which embodied a calm, quiet silence. Even in his use of darker, deeper colours there was little turbulence or upheaval in his paintings.
