Devi Mahatmya Series: Chamunda and the Shaktis battle Raktabeeja

In this tightly composed scene from the Devi Mahatmyam narrative, the eight-armed goddess Durga is leading a fierce charge against the asura Raktabeej. As Raktabeej furiously multiplies with every drop of blood that is shed, we see the other gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva assisted by the Saptamatrakas, trying to consume of the multiplying forms. Here Kali, instructed by Durga use her long tongue to devour the Raktabeeja army, and assists Durga in her victory. As the last episode of the Devi Mahatmyam, the battle is followed by peace, and the restoration of the efflorescence of nature.
