This scene at the reading of the proclamation on 1st January 1877 figures in several photographs and at least one painting of the Durbar. It shows the amphitheatre in the distance, with the foreground occupied by a crowd of spectators.
While high officials, ruling chiefs and some other important invitees were accommodated in the two pavilions, no thought had been given to the general spectator. Many, including the troops that had gathered for the event, watched from a considerable distance.
