The amphitheatre was constructed in the shape of a horseshoe, with seating for 16,000 invitees, three times the number seated in 1877. The proclamation ceremony took place in a pavilion located inside the arena. The only provision made for general spectators was a mound created at a spot several hundred yards away, facing the mouth of the horseshoe. The crowd who had come to see the durbar placed themselves on this but ultimately saw little and heard less.
