‘To this gate, [the Delhi Gate of the Red Fort] it is said, a peculiar significance is attached. Only the King of Delhi in the old days was allowed to pass through it when he went to the Jumma Masjid to worship … the last time this gate was opened was during the festival of the Ramzan Id in 1857, when the King of Delhi worshipped publicly. The King-Emperor’s entry into the Fort and City of Delhi will, therefore, be through a gate of wonderful historic, if not almost sacred, significance.’ – Manchester Courier, 24 November 1911
