Deforestation

A botanist’s daughter, Latika Katt grew up in the vicinity of forests, appreciating their importance and remaining sensitive to the need of nurturing the jungles. An award-winning sculptor, she has created several works on subjects related to the environment, of which this work is an example. She has experimented with materials throughout her career and here, she uses papier-mâché, terracotta and resin to create a stark picture of a landscape dominated by stumps, left behind by the cutting of trees. The bareness of the earth devoid of its green cover is graphic, almost repulsive, driving home the necessity of saving our forests urgently.
