That Prabhakar Barwe was an excellent draughtsman is a fact often overshadowed by his brilliant pursuit of the concepts of space and object and their relations with each other. This portrait of an unidentified gentleman brings forth the artist’s expertise with minimalist strokes, applied in ink on paper. The play of shadows in and about the face of the sitter adds character to the portrait. The most important feature of the portrait are the deep-set eyes of the subject, with a look of gravitas that establishes him as a thinking, brooding, introspecting individual.
