Coming of age at a time when Indian artists were charged with a zeal to seek an independent, modern idiom for art, Prabhakar Barwe went on to create a distinctively unique abstract language. The crux of his vocabulary was the challenge it posed to established notions of objects and their relationship with space, imbuing them with an element of surprise. This Untitled work, though it appears to be an art student’s chair, is not just a mere chair. Grafted with sensory organs and marks of its journey over a period of time, this anthropomorphic piece of furniture is a repository of stories lived on its being.
